Bowling for Columbine

a) Michael Moore's thesis in Bowling for Columbine is that the governments actions of violence affect the behaviour of young people.
 b) He supports this by using irony(such as interveiwing a man talking about peace and help for young people while standing in a factory making weapons), showing the actions of young people using guns and bombs, and showing graphic images of violence from the government that teens will have seen and heard and thought was ok. He interveiwed two guys from a small town who were talking about how they had a reputation because they were from that town but Moore got more out of them. They admitted that they had problems and one of them made bombs.

Environment

http://www2.macleans.ca/2010/09/09/a-garbage-bag-in-space/

The concern of space junk is increasing after the U.S. Iridium 33 and Russian Kosmos 2251 collided last year. It is expected that there will be 8 or 9 more collisions in the next 40 years and the NASA orbital debris program wants to prevent this by cleaning up space debris. They are coming up with a few different ideas of how to do this. The problem is that some of the opporational satellites are in danger of colliding with disfunctional satellites. There is a problem though, because each country should be responsible for cleaning up their own junk.

MAGAZINE SALES!

MAGAZINE SALES!
By Debbie Drycleaner

Last Friday, September 17th, Blank High School kicked off the Annual Magazine Fundraiser! Each student was given a paper with the 2010 Magazine Campaign Notice. The campaign will run for about 2 weeks and it will be serviced by CCRP. Students are suggested not to go door to door, but to talk to family, relatives, and friends about buying subscriptions. The 2 biggest benefits that come from the magazine sales are the fact that it promotes reading and 40% OF THE PROFIT ON EVERY ORDER GOES DIRECTLY TO BLANK HIGH SCHOOL!! Not only are students encouraged to sell magazines to win prizes at the end, BUT it is also raising money that goes to making the school better! There are many subscriptions to choose out of so it’s almost impossible not to find one for almost anybody. With Christmas coming up, this is definitely something to consider.

When Jim the magazine guy came, the school had an assembly where they heard about the campaign while watching volunteers get money, prizes, and getting made fun of.  Students loved the morning and Princess Grandma(grade 11) tells us, “I was full of excitement!”. When asked about his favorite part he said, “Winning prizes! Even though I’ve never won anything.” Gas Jockey(grade 11) says, “It’s kind of good seeing that guy again, you know? He comes every year and it’s like, Cool Beans!!”. Thanks to Jim the magazine guy for touching the hearts of so many year after year.

The SRC is doing a good job of promoting the sales and they have a couple incentives to get students to start selling. Jess Hermo, in his last year of high school and president of the SRC, encourages students to keep selling, “40% comes right back to our school! So it’s a good thing.” Nelly Von Braun, a grade 11 student and part of the SRC, when asked how many subscriptions have been sold so far says, “about 35”.

If you are a student of Blank High and you don’t have the order forms needed to sell subscriptions, extra order forms and Gift cards are available from the office. Students are told this is a great opportunity to raise money for our school and you don’t want to miss out.

Terminology

Conglomerate -To form or gather into a mass or whole.

-A corporation made up of a number of different companies that operate in diversified fields.

ex. The relationship between MTV and Sprite

Demographic -A portion of a population, especially considered as consumersex. Teenagers

Early Adopter- An early adopter or lighthouse customer is an early customer of a given company, product, or technology; in politics, fashion, art, and other fields, this person would be referred to as a trendsetter.
- In the improvement process, the opinion leader within the organization who brings in new ideas from the outside, tries them, and uses positive results to persuade others in the organization to adopt the successful changes.

Coolhunting- Observing emerging trends and styles, usually involving street fashion, and selling this market research to companies

ex. A person, or group of people, that go out to the streets, schools, homes or other places, observes and discovers what is "cool", and puts info and pictures on the internet for marketers to examine.

The paradox of Coolhunting- When "cool" is found and advertised, it becomes "uncool".

When all producers of a good or service in a market merge, it is the creation of a monopoly. If only a few competitors remain, it is termed an oligopoly.

Disney and McDonald's

The relationships between McDonalds and Disney, and the relationships between companies in "Merchants of Cool" take the same goal, and work together towards achieving it. This goal, is selling to kids.
McDonalds and Disney both saw the potential of advertising to the youngest generations because kids influence what their parents buy. These two companies worked together to sell more and appeal more to children.
In "Merchants of Cool", MTV and Sprite work together to get the attention of teens. They put on a concert together mostly to sell Sprite.
These companies all have something in common. They all realize that the best people to target, are teens. By doing that, they sell the most.
