Kill Boars for cash

http://www2.macleans.ca/2009/01/14/kill-boars-for-cash/

Wild boars were imported to Alberta in the the early 1900s to help with economy but they escaped and have become wild. Producing lots of babies there are now 1000-1500 of them damaging crops. These animals are heavy, sneaky, and nocturnal. They can also occansionally become a threat to humans. Alberta (very much pro-vermin control) is offering $50 to anyone who kills one.

http://www2.macleans.ca/2010/05/20/one-clever-plant/

Joule Unlimited, a company in Cambridge, Mass., has designed a a way to create liquid fuel from a plant. The plants creates diesel by taking sunlight and turning it directly into fuel. The company is hoping to begin selling their product commericially by 2012. It is said to be very cost-efficient and productive. With only 10,000 acres they can create 150 million gallons in just one year.

Trees falling from the sky

http://www2.macleans.ca/2010/11/18/trees-falling-from-the-sky/

There is a new idea that reforestation could be done much easier with airplanes. They would be dropping special containers that would drop little trees into clear areas; not areas where forests are being cut away. The idea has not been taken to with much enthusiasum but it could be a good thing with a success rate of up to 90%. Military aircraft would hopefully be used.

Coercion

A sexy looking woman with voluminous hair is blown up all over the page. HER HAIR IS HUGE. It says: finally, hair that speaks VOLUMES
1) John Frieda Collection is advertising hair products that give volume to your hair.
2) This add is trying to get people to buy their hair products without saying that they are selling hair products. They just show a picture of someone that many women would love to look like and people think that they need those hair products to get volume in their hair so that they can look THAT GOOD.

A beautiful almost naked woman being touched by a beautiful almost naked man. They are in a boat. They are wearing sunglasses so it is obviously a very hot day. RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS PICTURE IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL YELLOW PURSE YOU HAVE EVER SEEN.
1) Michael Kors is advertising this beautiful yellow purse(we think).
2) You see this sexy picture and you know that with this purse your life can be JUST LIKE THIS. It doesn't say anything- the picture speaks for itself.

A road that cleans the air

http://www2.macleans.ca/2010/08/19/a-road-that-cleans-the-air/

Adding a coating of titanium dioxide to concrete roads. With the help of sunlight this natural photocatalytic chemical removes nitrogen oxides. It turns pollutants that comes from cars into nitrates and they get washed away by rain. Titanium dioxide also breaks down dirt so the roads can stay cleaner. This chemical is being used in some countries to help remove pollution but other countries have yet to use this chemical is actually not very harmful or expensive and should be used to help fight pollution in our cities.

Shh . . . they can hear us

http://www2.macleans.ca/2010/11/04/shh%e2%80%89-%e2%80%89%e2%80%89they-can-hear-us/

Researcher Aran Mooney has spent a lot of the last year studying hearing in squid. It was assumed that squid could not hear at all but it turns out that although they can't respond to dolphin clicks and they can't hear as well as humans, they can detect low frequencies. Mooney has been using different kinds of experiments to study the way a squid hears. This study is being used to find ways that they can help with hearing in humans. Unnatural oceans noises might be dangerous to squid and without this animal, the whole ecosystem would be dramatically changed and maybe damaged.

Bowling for Columbine

Michael Moore’s documentary Bowling for Columbine argues that people in North America believe that the United States is more violent than Canada. Through a variety of ways, Moore presents us with this idea. Should a person agree with him, or not?

Evening news in the States seems to be created for one reason: To generate fear in the public. In a montage of evening news, we see clips showing Y2K news and escalator dangers, stories that have created mass fear or stories that pose no real threat but have been made to cause the public to worry. In contrast, when Moore is visiting Canada he notices the evening news and sees that they talk more about peace, political problems, and there is even a clip where the news is doing a story on speed bumps. In Moore’s words, “They aren’t being pumped full of fear every night.” Is there really a big difference in the news we are fed? Do Canadians really see less violence and tragedy on their evening news? The interviewed people claim they don’t really have any fears. For those people who have seen the difference in the evening news, the opinion is that the United States is much more violent. But that’s just according to what has been shown to the public in the evenings.

In Canada, it appears that people care less about your colour, language, or nationality. They don’t blame black people for committing crimes because it’s easier. Moore visits the Canadian side and begins talking to Americans who feel that they are less set apart when they are on the Canadian side. There is a montage showing clips of American black people being arrested, and another montage presents us with images and suspect lists from news stories that all describe black males. Professor Barry Glassner tells Moore that it may not be all black males being blamed, but the news chooses those stories to cover. It stirs up feelings in the viewers of fear of black men. In Canada, there are many different cultures and races, but there does not seem to be any discrimination against a certain people type. There is a feeling of acceptance according to the people that Michael Moore talks too.

The violence including guns is very low in Canada and quite high in the U.S. Moore tells us that Canada’s residents have lots of guns but the amount of gun murders in Canada is significantly less than the gun murders in the States. When interviewing Canadians, they don’t talk about having loaded guns in their houses like Charlton Heston and James Nichols; they have them mostly for hunting. There may even be some encouragement from the news for teens to be violent. They see how there are many other angry people killing others, and the government and military are using guns and bombs and missiles to solve their war issues. In Canada, there is more talk about using peace to solve problems. If any of what was just said didn’t take it home for you, here are some facts:
11,127. This number may mean nothing to you. But 11,127 is the number of gun deaths that occurred in the U.S.A. in 2001*. Compare that to the 165 gun deaths in Canada during the same year*.  Given this information, do you want to believe that the United States is more violent than Canada?

This documentary gives us facts, interviews, opinions, and it is all done in such a way to make us believe what Moore has to say. Moore gives plenty to chew on, to think about, and with that information, a person is given the knowledge to make to decide for their selves whether Canada is less violent than the United States of America.

Meet your kids’ new roommate: The Bedbug

http://www2.macleans.ca/2010/10/09/new-roommate-the-bedbug/

The budbug is on the hunt again and Univeristies are one of the best places for them to spread. With all the people coming and going, bedbugs can travel from dorm to dorm very easily. Universities use bug-sniffer dogs to check for bedbugs so that they can stop the spread of these terrible insects.

Sharks’ favourite lunch stop

http://www2.macleans.ca/2010/07/29/sharks-favourite-lunch-stop/

Sharks’ favourite lunch stop

135 of the 639 shark attacks between the years of 1999 and 2008 occured on the 75 km stretch of coast inVolusia County. The inlet has nutrient rich waters with sandbars and a high surf which attracts many fish and in turn, attracts many sharks. The sharks mistake people kicking feet and arms and colourful swim suits as fish. Although there are many warnings about swimming and surfing on that coast, it doesn't really stop people from doing just that. The people who are attacked don't really feel the pain of the bite right away, they just feel something brush their legs and look down to see a chunk of skin gone or hanging there, streaming with blood and surrounded by dozens of puncture holes from the sharks' teeth.

Bowling for Columbine

a) Michael Moore's thesis in Bowling for Columbine is that the governments actions of violence affect the behaviour of young people.
 b) He supports this by using irony(such as interveiwing a man talking about peace and help for young people while standing in a factory making weapons), showing the actions of young people using guns and bombs, and showing graphic images of violence from the government that teens will have seen and heard and thought was ok. He interveiwed two guys from a small town who were talking about how they had a reputation because they were from that town but Moore got more out of them. They admitted that they had problems and one of them made bombs.

Environment

http://www2.macleans.ca/2010/09/09/a-garbage-bag-in-space/

The concern of space junk is increasing after the U.S. Iridium 33 and Russian Kosmos 2251 collided last year. It is expected that there will be 8 or 9 more collisions in the next 40 years and the NASA orbital debris program wants to prevent this by cleaning up space debris. They are coming up with a few different ideas of how to do this. The problem is that some of the opporational satellites are in danger of colliding with disfunctional satellites. There is a problem though, because each country should be responsible for cleaning up their own junk.

MAGAZINE SALES!

MAGAZINE SALES!
By Debbie Drycleaner

Last Friday, September 17th, Blank High School kicked off the Annual Magazine Fundraiser! Each student was given a paper with the 2010 Magazine Campaign Notice. The campaign will run for about 2 weeks and it will be serviced by CCRP. Students are suggested not to go door to door, but to talk to family, relatives, and friends about buying subscriptions. The 2 biggest benefits that come from the magazine sales are the fact that it promotes reading and 40% OF THE PROFIT ON EVERY ORDER GOES DIRECTLY TO BLANK HIGH SCHOOL!! Not only are students encouraged to sell magazines to win prizes at the end, BUT it is also raising money that goes to making the school better! There are many subscriptions to choose out of so it’s almost impossible not to find one for almost anybody. With Christmas coming up, this is definitely something to consider.

When Jim the magazine guy came, the school had an assembly where they heard about the campaign while watching volunteers get money, prizes, and getting made fun of.  Students loved the morning and Princess Grandma(grade 11) tells us, “I was full of excitement!”. When asked about his favorite part he said, “Winning prizes! Even though I’ve never won anything.” Gas Jockey(grade 11) says, “It’s kind of good seeing that guy again, you know? He comes every year and it’s like, Cool Beans!!”. Thanks to Jim the magazine guy for touching the hearts of so many year after year.

The SRC is doing a good job of promoting the sales and they have a couple incentives to get students to start selling. Jess Hermo, in his last year of high school and president of the SRC, encourages students to keep selling, “40% comes right back to our school! So it’s a good thing.” Nelly Von Braun, a grade 11 student and part of the SRC, when asked how many subscriptions have been sold so far says, “about 35”.

If you are a student of Blank High and you don’t have the order forms needed to sell subscriptions, extra order forms and Gift cards are available from the office. Students are told this is a great opportunity to raise money for our school and you don’t want to miss out.

ex. The relationship between MTV and Sprite

Demographic -A portion of a population, especially considered as consumersex. Teenagers

Early Adopter- An early adopter or lighthouse customer is an early customer of a given company, product, or technology; in politics, fashion, art, and other fields, this person would be referred to as a trendsetter.
- In the improvement process, the opinion leader within the organization who brings in new ideas from the outside, tries them, and uses positive results to persuade others in the organization to adopt the successful changes.

Coolhunting- Observing emerging trends and styles, usually involving street fashion, and selling this market research to companies

ex. A person, or group of people, that go out to the streets, schools, homes or other places, observes and discovers what is "cool", and puts info and pictures on the internet for marketers to examine.

The paradox of Coolhunting- When "cool" is found and advertised, it becomes "uncool".

Disney and McDonald's

The relationships between McDonalds and Disney, and the relationships between companies in "Merchants of Cool" take the same goal, and work together towards achieving it. This goal, is selling to kids.
McDonalds and Disney both saw the potential of advertising to the youngest generations because kids influence what their parents buy. These two companies worked together to sell more and appeal more to children.
In "Merchants of Cool", MTV and Sprite work together to get the attention of teens. They put on a concert together mostly to sell Sprite.
These companies all have something in common. They all realize that the best people to target, are teens. By doing that, they sell the most.

What is cool?!

Cool- Cool is an additude, personality, appearance, object, or almost anything, that a person, group, or culture, finds appealing. There really is no set definition as opinions of cool vary by person, group, culture, and times.

  • Certain types of clothing in different cultures are seen as "cool". For example, in lots of groups, skaters shoes are popular for teens to wear. Many teens wear DC shoes because they are found as appealing and they think that wearing them, may make them seem "cooler".

  • Certain people that are well known, such as famous actors or musicians, are seen as role models and defined as "cool". Jimi Hendrix, for example, is seen as one of the most amazing guitarists who ever lived. Most people would define him as a very "cool" person. They see him as a role model and they look up to him.

This webpage has online shopping and pictures of great looking models. It's very enjoyable to look at. ;) It is mostly geared to teens and young adults but everything is expensive, so they either must have lots of money, or they sold their house to buy a sweater.

  • Hollister- Beachy, surfing - teens and surfers
Hollister is just like abercrombie & fitch but it is less expensive and slightly more beachy and surfy. The webpage has online shopping and pictures.
